This is our ultimate checklist for making sure you get a carpet you love, so read on to make your home your haven.
Before You Buy
There are many things to consider and do before you commit to buying your dream carpet – if you don’t do these things, then the carpet you end up with may not be your dream one at all! So, here’s the checklist of what you need to do:
Find Your Style
For a home to be a haven, it must reflect who you are – this means it needs to speak to your personal style. If you’re not 100% sure what that style is, it’s time to start looking for inspiration!
Our favourite places to go for inspiration are (of course) Instagram and Pinterest, but you can also look to interior design books and magazines for some guidance or ask your most stylish friends.
In doing this, you may realise that your love multiple styles, and that’s ok! It’s a sign that you should be choosing a carpet with neutral colours that can adapt to a multitude of styles while you continue to grow and evolve your tastes.
Consider Your Space
Once you know your style, have a think about the space in your home. Some rooms are better suited for carpet than others.
We all know that carpet in the bathroom or kitchen is a bad idea (begone that trend from the ‘60s), but is your family currently young and prone to throwing food on the floor? Well, then you may want to consider either not having carpet in the dining room or choosing a carpet that’s stain resistant and easy to clean.
You need to decide which rooms you’re getting carpeted prior to hunting down the right carpet for you, as this will be a major factor in your budget! Speaking of...
Decide Your Budget
You need to decide on a budget before you start looking at carpet samples because you don’t want to fall in love with one only to realise it’s more than you can afford!
As your carpet will be the foundation of your home’s style, you don’t want to be cutting costs in this area of your home build or renovation. But you need to be realistic about what you can and can’t afford – and you need to stick to the number you come up with, no matter what.
Measure Your Rooms
It’s good to understand how much carpet is needed before looking at samples as it will help you understand which carpets are in your price range. There’s an art to measuring rooms accurately, it’s very hard to do by yourself – which is why it’s a great thing that we offer a free measure service!

Preparing Your Home
Once you have selected your carpet, it’s time to get your home ready for its installation! If your home is a new build, you won’t have to do very much at all. But, if you’re renovating, there are some things you can do to ensure installation day goes smoothly.
Move Your Furniture
This should be obvious – you need to remove all the furniture in the room/s getting the new carpet! If you’re carpeting most of your home, this can be pretty hard (you don’t want to move all your furniture outside, especially if it’s going to rain!) - have a plan before-hand about where you’ll be keeping your furniture while removing your existing carpet and getting the new one installed.
Make a Clear Pathway
You want to make it easy to get the new carpet moved from the truck outside into the room it’s being installed in. So, think about the pathway the installers will be taking through your home, and make sure the path is clear. This means everything, including furniture, is moved out of the way (no tripping hazards please!).
Make Plans for Your Kids
Your little ones are very cute and very excitable, the big changes being made to the floors will make them very curious. Unfortunately, this means they may try to get involved with the installation – this could be dangerous as the installers will have sharp objects and may accidentally trip over your children if they get underfoot. So, make plans for your little ones that will get them out of the house on the day of the installation!

Maintaining Your New Carpet
Once your dream carpet is installed, it’s up to you to keep it looking and feeling great. Our top tips for making sure your new carpet stays beautiful are:
-
Vacuum regularly to prevent dust and dirt from embedding itself into the carpet fibre
-
Clean spills immediately to prevent staining
-
Don’t leave heavy furniture in one place for too long, or regularly shift it brush the fibres underneath, to avoid denting
-
Organise annual steam cleans to keep your carpet fresh and remove any dirt that your regular vacuuming may have missed
